Operating SEYWOL

Budget INTERREG VI
The Operating SEYWOL project, coordinated by GIP CYROI under the Interreg VI Indian Ocean programme, demonstrated the effectiveness of an innovative biological control technique against the Aedes albopictus mosquito, a vector of dengue fever. Conducted on Moyenne Island (Seychelles), in partnership with the University of Seychelles and the Seychelles Ministry of Health, the project used the Incompatible Insect Technique (IIT): sterile male mosquitoes carrying Wolbachia are released to prevent reproduction. Result: a 95% reduction of the population in 3 months. The mosquitoes were produced in Réunion Island, reared locally and released in the field — nearly 1.9 million males in total. This project confirms the logistical feasibility and public health value of an environmentally friendly approach within a regional cooperation framework.
